The CatFish is Heating UP!!!

Took my daughter catfishing last night and what a night. I didn’t have that much time because she had school the next day but we had to get out. Throw a rod out… and 5 min. never even went by. FISH ON!!!

We where using cut up sucker and Cut up Gills. I had a Live sucker out there and never got a hit. But we had 2 oz No roll sinkers on a bead and then a 2/0 Hook. Just anchor in front of a Log Jam and But the Lines out.

If you don’t get one after about 15 to 20 min. Move to the next Jam. It was really nice out side last night. The Moon was so Bright that you didn’t need a flash light. Good time to go out and look up at Star’s and wait to listen for that drag to start spinning 1,000 miles an hour.

If you caught some nice fish over the weekend. Send me a Picture and I will throw it up on the site. Shagtrent@hotmail.com

Let’s see who got what!!

Trout Walleye and Pike!!!!!!!

What more can ya ask for? The Opener is this weekend it’s going to get Crazy. It’s going to Be Great for the Trout Fisherman because we have had some rain and the Streams have came up and brought new fish into your holes. And now the water is Just right for Plunkin a Crawler in front of a Brush Pile to intise that Big BROWNIE to come out and Just Slam the Piss out of your Crawler. Or try a Culvert under the Road. I know allot of guys that don’t even get in the water they will do the Stealth Stalk on top of the Culvert and drop a Crawler Down in the Hole and just give it line. And then when they get a hit they give it a few Seconds and then Set the hook. THE FIGHT IS ON!!!!! There are so many different ways to get um. If your a fly Fisherman. The Stones are Hatching right now. Find a nice riffle with some trout slurpin. And BINGO FISH ON GET THE F’N NET!!!!

Walleye guys!!!! Ya baby it’s time. We had low water all winter long that kept those fish in the Lower River. But then we get a nice Rain the water came up and allowed those Big Breeder Hens to come up allot better. We had allot colder water this year so it took um a little Longer to spawn. But thats a good thing Because now it’s opener and it’s time to lay the Smack down on Some EYES!!!

Allot of guys I know on the Grand have been getting um a few ways. Trolling Crank Baits has been a great way to get um. And then just settin back not making allot of noise and Drifting. Get ya a Drift sock to slow your Drift down. If you have a 16 foot boat or bigger you might want to get to Socks on. That Allows your drift to slow down and it gives um a second longer to suck it down there throat. So he can be on your Dinner Plate that night. And don’t forget the Cheak Meat!!!! If your throwing Plastics. Try to HOT WIRE them. Google it. And it will show ya how to do it. Why are people Hot Wiren there Plastics is Because to get the Short Biters.

Pike fisherman. Throw a Big SUCK SUCK out there on a Float. Or Throw Spinner Baits. Or Spoons. You’ll Get um if there there!!!

A shit ton of Smalleys are down town right now. Had my Buddy don say you could walk across the River on there backs there so many downTown Grand Rapids right now. Use Crawlers, Crank Baits, Twister tails. If you throw it in front of there face. FISH on BROTHER!!!

Hope you all have a great opener get of your ass off the Couch and grab a Buddy and go catch some fish.

Killn the GILLS and SPECS at REEDS LAKE!!!!

Went out to Reeds Lake this morning and we killed the big gills!!!! Our secret was moving allot. Going along the bank and I mean right along the bank and scoopin um out. Spotting a school of gills Sunnin and gettn um.

We would fish each spot about 15 to 30 min!!! And then after they died down a little we would move. They are removing all the cover from the back channels on the south side of the lake so we went and found a few more spots.

As we went along the edge of the lake when you hit a school of gills you would see the gills moving out to deaper water. When we found the cattails and the lily pads we hit fish there. And we threw right up by the bank. When we would start to fish a spot we would throw out a little deeper and then work our way in. Good time to get a Basket of Panfish right now!!!

Morels are starting to “POP” up!!!

Went out yesterday and took a walk in the woods and my buddy and I found a Black Morel. Good time to go take a walk in the woods and scoop these uniquely delicious treats out and try to find ya some.

And when ya do get a nice batch of um. Just soak um in water and clean um off and roll um around in some flower and fry um up. If you have never had um. I would say get out there and look for um. Here are some tips for ya

  • Step 1
  • Time your mushroom hunt for early spring when morel mushrooms are in season and weather conditions are right. Morels usually grow in moist conditions, just after the second deep spring rain. Another good seasonal indicator is that redbud trees produce tiny blooms during the same period that morels grow.
  • Step 2

Wear clothing designed for damp wilderness hiking, including pants and socks that wick away moisture and sturdy hiking boots that will support your feet and prevent injury. You should also carry a hiking stick to help you maintain your balance. Morels typically grow on the side of a hill, so taking these precautions will help keep you warm as well as preventing falls, bruises, blisters and rashes that can be caused by wet conditions, clothing that rubs and badly fitting shoes. Additionally, the longer you are comfortable while you hike, the longer you will be able to hunt morels.
  • Step 3

  • Search hilly areas filled with tall tulip poplar trees for morel mushrooms. Morel mushrooms like to grow in damp leaf mold in areas of constant shade. Look for plants that thrive under the same conditions that morel mushrooms like. Some of these plants include moss and fiddlehead ferns.
  • Step 4

Look for morel mushrooms on the south slope of a hillside in the earliest parts of April. By early May look for morels on the north slope of the hillside.
  • Step 5

Pick any morels that you find by breaking them or allot of people i know cut them. So they don’t get more dirt in there other Mushrooms. But you want to cut um off at the base of the stem and putting them in a bag like a Orange or Onion Bags so the spores can be released. So you can keep coming back to that spot and find um year after year. The most common place to find morels is in the woods. Morels like to come up around dead and decaying trees such as the Elm. Morels can be found near living Ash, Poplar, Aspen and maples just to name a few of the main hosting trees. Morels will grow in heavy leaf cover, dried creek bottoms and heavy foliage. Try hunting near edges of river banks and mossy areas. Look for areas that have a rich black and sandy soil. Morels seem to prefer sandy soils. Morels hate clay. They should be well drained and no standing water. Shady areas are ideal for late season hunting and more open areas in the early season.
